Cairo, Egypt

I tried to put all the pictures in the text but the computer isn't clicking and dragging very well! boo that that. So this is a little dis-organized, Sorry.

I bet you know what we are pretending to be here.

I was making fun of mom. We were taking pictures and I told her to do peace and she did it this way. I told her only chinese people did it this way. We taught here that your hand needs to be turned around.

This is me standing on Egypt! Notice my necklace? I love it.

This is the loft in Aunt Phyllis' classroom. I would love to be a kid in her class!

Don't I look good with lots of pounds??
Their money is done in pounds rather than dollars. $1 is 5 pounds.
This was dad our first night there. He fell asleep at dinner!! haha. It was a long trip! 2 hour wait in Phoenix. 5 hour flight to New York. 8 hr layover in New York. 11 hour flight to Cairo. 30 minute drive to maadi. Then dinner. sigh. That falafel burger never tasted so good. :)

These are the colors of ramadan. They have test set up all over where people can go eat. I guess ramadan is the a festival of tents and the tents are made out of this material so they decorate with it during the holiday.
Look at all the stacked styrafoam!!How do they get up there to stack and tie it?

This is us our first day!! Yahoo! Isn't lindsey's hat cute? We had to buy it in the airport because her hair was getting just a little out of control.
WOW! What to say first! The trip over here was quite different. I have flown once and that was an hour flight. Our 5 our flight to New York was intense and the 11 hour flight to Cairo was Cruel and unusual punishment!! I tried to sleep but that didn't work very well. At the Kennedy airport Lindsey and I both bought neck pillows that have a vibrating thing inside. Those were nice to have when you wake up from your nap in some crazy position and your neck feels like its going to disconnect from your melon. As I was flying into Cairo I looked out the window and it was magnificent. Here is a picture of the coastline. For about a mile on both sides of the nile its green, green, green. Lots of farming. Then just a bit away from there were the PYRAMIDS! Very cool to see from the air.
The driving here is INSANE. They turn 3 lanes into 7. The lines on the road are only for decoration. IF you want to go somewhere you just go! There doesn't appear to be any ryme or reason! We met this cute little boy in the airport. He is about 9. He has lived in Egypt for a few years and he said that one year santa clause brought him a gift a few weeks late and left a note that says "Sorry I am late, But you know how driving is in Egypt." haha. That about sums it up.

Today is Friday and its about 5:20 pm. Where all you are in America it would be 8:20 am. We spoke in church at the Cairo branch this morning. The muslim sabbath is on Friday so thats when the worship. Everyone has work and school on Sunday. It's been kind of weird. There were about 100 people there! I thought it would be smaller. I imagined it was a lot like it was in the early days of the church! Everyone in the branch plays such an important part in the branch. If someone is missing it kind of throws everything off.

After church we went shopping at Road 9. There were tons of shops. A particular shop was my dream come true!! A JEWELRY SHOP. As we were flying over here I told my mom that the 1 thing I wanted was a necklace with a HUGE all-seeing eye. At the time it was a pipe dream because I didn't think they would have anything like it. I WAS WRONG. I found it and its even all rinestoned out, just how I like em. :) I will post pictures sometime soon. Well wait a second... Why not right now? I will see if I can figure it out on this computer.

As I was trying to log onto this website everything was in Arabic! haha I had to click around for a bit before I found the one that allowed me to log in.

So far everything has been a lot like Mexico. The big difference is all the houses are apartments. There are so many people that the build UP. I haven't seen the poor parts of town, only from the street. All the buildings look very dirty and ugly on the outside but on the inside they are lovely! They are very detailed and interesting. They love detail and design. When you buy an apartment it is just cement floors and walls. You have to put everything in yourself so they are all very different.

Labor Day

We had a great weekend up in the homeland! I am so glad that I was raised in the white mountains! It rained the whole weekend. I LOVED going to sleep at night! I slept with both the windows open and it was FREEZING. There was no way I was going to get out of bed and shut the windows though. I love a cold room. There was a slight breeze and I could hear coyotes off in the distant. One night there was a faint smell of skunk. It was PERFECT. You know the song Small town USA?? Thats what its like. (Thank you Charles) Here are some pictures from the weekend.

This is a girl that is excited to go get wood!!
Showing our enthusiasm.
This is what the back window of my truck looks like full of wood! What a great site!

ummm.....

Chloe playing in her little tree fort.

Max dominated that stump of wood! He worked on it for quite awhile and was pretty tired when he was done.

Look how big she is getting!

LAKE DAY! LAKE DAY!

We haven't been out to the lake in a few weeks because the ski needed on oil change. Sister FINALLY got it so we went out to the lake 1 last time with the warm weather. You can belive that we will still go in october when we get back from AFRICA.

What is that face?

Kind of a big day for me... See that buoy? The one WAY WAY WAY out there?? Well I swam to that. Then I swam back. I made it. I didn't die. The kicker was that I was scared to go that far so I swam half way there and back twice before I decided to just swim all the way there. Brett was the only one who made it with me! I always heard swimming was a good work out. Now I know for myself!

Lindsey and Roommate Tori.

Me and Roommate on the ski. Roomate didn't want to drive, EVER! she is crazy.

As I was dragging myself into bed last night I notice something shiny on the headboard. Upon further investigation I find High School Musical stickers wrapped around the iron bar. How did those get there?? Then it hits me... ah yes... The sleepover. haha. The kids helped me decorate my room! So sweet. :)

SLUMBER PROBLEMS
Remember how I have had trouble sleeping? Yeah, its been annoying since sleeping is one of my favorite things to do.... I realized that I haven't been making my bed like I usually do and JUST maybe that was causing my sleep anxiety. So before hopping into bed I made it properly. So here it is. All made. This is my summer blanket. Its too hot for the feathery goodness that I usually have on here. First thing when I woke up I made it again so it will be ready for me tonight. For the record I slept GREAT last night! So I guess making your bed does help you sleep better. Who would have thought...

I love the pattern of this quilt. My grandma Jensen made this blanket for me. I love it.

BLACK LEGGINGS

Yep, as I said yesterday, I wear them now. Here is my outfit from yesterday.
Dinner friends
Last night we had Jakeb and the sisters over for dinner. Lindsey and Tori made Hawaiian haystacks and they were YUMMO! I hadn't had them since girls camp. It was divine. I get so sick of eating out all the time.
Lindsey, Tori, and the sisters.

Jakeb made an ALL Chocolate Boston Creme Pie Cake. HOLY COW. It was divine!! The sad thing was he took all the time to make this cake, and then didn't have any because he doesn't eat chocolate! haha. I love that boy, but sometimes I don't get him. MAKE SOMETHING YOU LIKE TO EAT.

He used floss to cut the cake in half to put a wonderful creme inside.

That is the wonderful chocolate creme.

Then he put a dandy creme on top. There were supposed to be raspberries on top but we forgot those. oh well. It was still grand.

SLUMBER PARTY

Last weekend Lindsey and I had all the nieces and nephews, and Elicia and her girls, over for a sleepover! We had a grand time. I hope all the kids did as well. We watched a movie, played at the park, took baths, painted our nails, had popcorn, baked and frosted cookies.

Lets just say that Jensen is just like his daddy and gets GLUED into the TV.

This is how 6 little kids look when the fall asleep

And this is how they end up. haha Annie was quite the traveler.

Max and Chloe weren't quite done moving. 5 minutes later they were like this.

Jensen sleeps like his dad too! haha

Chloe and Dakota

Such a cute picture!!

Max playing with my pitiful excuse for toys. I forget what kid it was but they told me I need to get better toys. I will work on that.
They all played nice together.

BATH TIME WAS SO CUTE! I have some pictures but I don't know how the parents feel about those pictures being on here so I am just going to opt out of posting them.

Virgin

I WAS a leggings virgin. I have NEVER worn them before.... Till today. Black shoes, Black leggings, Purple Dress, Gold. I must say, I like it. I like that I don't have to worry about how short my dress is, how I cross my legs, etc. Its amazing. You can bet I will be picking up a few more colors to wear over in Egypt. Fantastic. My outfit looks great I think. I little on the 80's side... In a good way. Don't worry. My bangs aren't 6 inches off my head.

I am always one to check out a nice truck. This is usually what I am doing while driving to and from work. Well this morning, as I was checking out the tail end of a nice tundra, I come up to the drivers window, and who is sitting there?? None other than my BROTHER Buddy!! Haha. We look at each other and smile and just laugh. It was probably my FAVORITE drive to work. It made me feel good that even though I am in the great big city, you neverk now when family will pop up. I better ALWAYS be on my best behavior! No more deviant ways for Mern.

Happy Tuesday to all of you....

8 Days till EGYPT..... YAHOOOOOO..... I will almost miss all of you
